Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
